FULL-Orienteering & Free Play- July 5 - July 9, 2021
Orienteering & Free Play is a one-week day camp that meets five afternoons. Jean McCarney, an elementary and special education teacher and Ed Scott, a science educator, will spend time in the great outdoors with the campers exploring different parts of Rock Hollow Woods and engaging in free play.
Orienteering is the sport of navigation, using a highly detailed orientation map of Rock Hollow Woods. Orienteering helps people improve their navigation using an orientation map and teamwork.
Campers will learn the basic skills of orienteering. Each day campers will engage in an orienteering course with peers and the course will be longer and a bit more challenging as the week progresses. Through instruction, collaboration, and cooperation, teams of campers will successfully navigate Rock Hollow Woods’ orienteering courses. Each day, there will be time for free play, too.
Research suggests that free play, especially in nature, is essential to cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. Free play happens when children create their own agenda and play together. This kind of play occurs easily at Rock Hollow Woods because there are so many natural environments to stimulate creativity and discovery. Campers will receive a Rock Hollow Woods t-shirt the first day of camp.
Appropriate for children entering 2nd through 7th grades.
