Bird Poems Workshop is a two-hour morning program to celebrate National Poetry Month with local poet, Jennifer Hetrick. After observing birds in a newly built garden at Rock Hollow Woods, children will get a chance to see pictures of birds as well as touch plush toys and real feathers to inspire their short poems.
The instructor will read her own sample poems about winged ones, asking children to read her poems out loud afterward to hear and take in the sounds of the language. This helps to better train the ear to know good poetry and phrasings. Discussing what ideas, words, and visuals stand out most to craft each child's poetic lines.
bird poem no. 7
on a sunday morning, the black of a crow
swoops in to land on a branch of one of the tallest
trees in town, a norway spruce-almost double
the height of the house closest to its roots. it caws
in shadows as it rests on green needles and near
undropped cones, resting before another flight
in sunlight.
~Jennifer Hetrick
In the second portion of the program, the instructor will assist children with learning to recognize the value of their knowledge from their experiences to write poetry. Children will then share their poetry with the group. Afterward, they will have their very own poems to take home to share.
Appropriate for children presently in Kindergarten through 5th grades.
